This photograph shows several young menhaden with deep, gaping ulcers. These ulcers peneterate through the dermis and abdominal muscle. On a severity scale of 0-5, these lesions rank 5 (severe). Lesions such as these could be caused by virus, certain chemical agents, parasites, predators or some types of dinoflagellates. Fish affected to this degree would certainly not survive these lesions.
